Spain’s overall gambling income (GGR) expanded by 78.2% in the final quarter of 2022 compared to the same time frame a year prior, fueled by expansion in the athletic wagering sector.

Spain: Athletic Wagering Propels 80% Revenue Uptick Annually
During the three-month span, GGR reached €313.3 million (£274.7 million/$334.2 million), which is also 27.1% greater than the €240.8 million recorded in the third quarter of 2022, according to data released by the Spanish regulatory body, the General Directorate for the Regulation of Gambling (DGOJ).
Specifically, athletic wagering GGR reached €141.4 million, an increase of 223.4% annually (up 52.8% quarterly), accounting for 45.1% of total GGR for the quarter.
The DGOJ noted that pre-match betting increased 108.5% quarterly, in-play betting increased 13.8%, other betting increased 86.8%, and horse racing betting increased 63.6%.
Moving on to casinos and GGR, there was an annual increase of 32.4% to €142.3 million, which is 11.1% higher than the third quarter. The sector accounted for 45.4% of total GGR in the fourth quarter, slightly greater than athletic wagering.
Slot machine GGR was 27.3% greater than the previous year, while live roulette GGR also increased by 51.7%.
Elsewhere, poker GGR increased 26.8% annually to €26.1 million, accounting for 8.3% of the total market, while bingo GGR fell 11.5% to €3.6 million and competition revenue also fell 36.7% to €30,000.
## Elevated Promotional Expenditures
Marketing outlays hit €106.4 million this quarter, reflecting a 13.9% surge compared to the same period in 2022 and a 30.1% jump compared to the preceding quarter. This encompasses €51.7 million in promotional outlays, €38.7 million in sponsorship fees, and €14.6 million in affiliate fees.
The average monthly count of active gaming accounts reached 1,185,452, representing a 22.9% rise compared to the same period last year and a 21.1% increase compared to the previous quarter. The average monthly count of new gaming accounts was 131,095, reflecting a 21.6% decline compared to the same period last year but a 23.9% rise compared to the preceding quarter.
At the close of this quarter, there were 78 licensed operators in Spain, encompassing 54 casino operators, 45 betting operators, 9 poker operators, 3 bingo operators, and 2 competition operators.
