Swedish gambling proceeds saw a 5 percent rise in 2022.
In 2022, the total income of operators holding Swedish gambling permits hit 27.4 billion Swedish kronor (roughly 2.1 billion pounds, 2.4 billion euros, or 2.6 billion dollars), a 5.1 percent boost from the prior year.
Online gambling earnings climbed by 6 percent to 17 billion Swedish kronor, compared to 16 billion Swedish kronor in the same period last year, according to preliminary figures from the Swedish regulator Spelinspektionen. However, total income from national lotteries and slot machines remained steady, with earnings of 58 billion Swedish kronor in both 2021 and 2022.
The 2022 figures show a return to normalcy for the industry after a series of restrictions put in place during the COVID-19 pandemic (including temporary gambling responsibility measures and the partial closure of state-owned Casino Cosmopol), as this is the first full year since 2020 that has not been affected by gambling restrictions.
This is evident in the annual income of Casino Cosmopol, which jumped by 93.5 percent year-over-year, from 277 million Swedish kronor to 536 million Swedish kronor.
Quarterly data
On a quarterly basis, revenue grew by 3.2 percent in the three months ending December 31, reaching 72 billion Swedish kronor, compared to 70 billion Swedish kronor in the same period last year.
Revenue from national lotteries increased by 4%.
During the final three months of 2022, the Swedish gambling industry observed a small rise in earnings, reaching 9.27 billion Swedish kronor, a 2% increase compared to the preceding three months. This growth was fueled by various sectors, except for Swedish restaurant casinos, which encountered a substantial 15.9% decline in revenue, dropping from 63 million to 53 million Swedish kronor.
The quantity of individuals utilizing the self-exclusion platform Spelpaus.se also expanded, with roughly 85,000 individuals now registered, a 5% surge from the previous quarter.
