The National Council for Problem Gambling (NCPG) has issued a document concerning sports wagering firms seeking to collaborate with academic institutions.

The document, crafted by the NCPG’s Prevention Committee, discusses how betting companies, universities, and state authorities can work together to prevent young individuals from developing gambling issues.

The document indicates that young people are more susceptible to gambling problems. A 2016 investigation by the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) revealed that 55% of male student-athletes had engaged in gambling within the past year.

The same investigation found that among student-athletes who had gambled for money, 88% of males and 69% of females began gambling before entering college.

Another study conducted in 2019 indicated that college athletes are more prone to gambling issues than other students due to their highly competitive nature, increased anxiety and mental health concerns, and higher rates of drug and alcohol use.
