Internet service providers in Australia have been directed by the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) to restrict access to an expanded list of questionable gambling and affiliate marketing websites.
Platforms such as Pokies Parlour, Ninja Spins, and several others with names suggestive of “dubious online casinos” are the most recent additions to the prohibited list.
It appears they were not operating within the guidelines established by the 2001 Interactive Gambling Act – the ACMA conducted an investigation and determined these sites were engaged in illicit activities.
The ACMA is taking decisive action; they are committed to safeguarding Australians from becoming entangled in unlawful online gambling. Blocking these websites is just one method they employ to achieve this. They are also emphasizing to the public that the appearance of legitimacy does not guarantee a site’s authenticity. Engaging with these unauthorized gambling platforms poses a significant risk to one’s earnings, and they aim to ensure everyone understands this.
Since initiating this crackdown in 2019, the ACMA has blocked a staggering 426 illegal gambling websites. Furthermore, over 160 questionable operators have ceased operations in Australia since the ACMA implemented stricter regulations in 2017.
In the last half-year, a record number of Australians are taking a gamble (or giving the reels a whirl) on the internet. A significant 11% of Australians are testing their fortune with digital wagering – an increase from 8% a mere two years prior.
